Prize for Resolution of the Poincaré Conjecture Awarded to Dr. Grigoriy Perelman

Математический институт Клэя в США присудил российскому ученому Григорию Перельману Премию тысячелетия (Millennium Prize) за доказательство гипотезы Пуанкаре. Об этом в четверг, 18 марта, сообщается на официальном сайте института.
В 2006 году ему была присуждена высшая математическая награда — Филдсовская премия, однако получить ее россиянин отказался. Согласился ли Перельман получить Премию тысячелетия от института Клэя, не уточняется.

The Clay Mathematics Institute (CMI) announces today that Dr. Grigoriy Perelman of St. Petersburg, Russia, is the recipient of the Millennium Prize for resolution of the Poincaré conjecture. The citation for the award reads:
The Clay Mathematics Institute hereby awards the Millennium Prize for resolution of the Poincaré conjecture to Grigoriy Perelman.
The Poincaré conjecture is one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems established by CMI in 2000. The Prizes were conceived to record some of the most difficult problems with which mathematicians were grappling at the turn of the second millennium; to elevate in the consciousness of the general public the fact that in mathematics, the frontier is still open and abounds in important unsolved problems; to emphasize the importance of working towards a solution of the deepest, most difficult problems; and to recognize achievement in mathematics of historical magnitude.
The award of the Millennium Prize to Dr. Perelman was made in accord with their governing rules: recommendation first by a Special Advisory Committee (Simon Donaldson, David Gabai, Mikhail Gromov, Terence Tao, and Andrew Wiles), then by the CMI Scientific Advisory Board (James Carlson, Simon Donaldson, Gregory Margulis, Richard Melrose, Yum-Tong Siu, and Andrew Wiles), with final decision by the Board of Directors (Landon T. Clay, Lavinia D. Clay, and Thomas M. Clay).
James Carlson, President of CMI, said today, "resolution of the Poincaré conjecture by Grigoriy Perelman brings to a close the century-long quest for the solution. It is a major advance in the history of mathematics that will long be remembered." Carlson went on to announce that CMI and the Institut Henri Poincaré (IHP) will hold a conference to celebrate the Poincaré conjecture and its resolution June 8 and 9 in Paris. The program will be posted on www.claymath.org. In addition, on June 7, there will be a press briefing and public lecture by Etienne Ghys at the Institut Océanographique, near the IHP.
Reached at his office at Imperial College, London for his reaction, Fields Medalist Dr. Simon Donaldson said, "I feel that Poincaré would have been very satisfied to know both about the profound influence his conjecture has had on the development of topology over the last century and the surprising way in which the problem was solved, making essential use of partial differential equations and differential geometry."
Poincaré's conjecture and Perelman's proof
Formulated in 1904 by the French mathematician Henri Poincaré, the conjecture is fundamental to achieving an understanding of three-dimensional shapes (compact manifolds). The simplest of these shapes is the three-dimensional sphere. It is contained in four-dimensional space, and is defined as the set of points at a fixed distance from a given point, just as the two-dimensional sphere (skin of an orange or surface of the earth) is defined as the set of points in three-dimensional space at a fixed distance from a given point (the center).
Since we cannot directly visualize objects in n-dimensional space, Poincaré asked whether there is a test for recognizing when a shape is the three-sphere by performing measurements and other operations inside the shape. The goal was to recognize all three-spheres even though they may be highly distorted. Poincaré found the right test (simple connectivity, see below). However, no one before Perelman was able to show that the test guaranteed that the given shape was in fact a three-sphere.
In the last century, there were many attempts to prove, and also to disprove, the Poincaré conjecture using the methods of topology. Around 1982, however, a new line of attack was opened. This was the Ricci flow method pioneered and developed by Richard Hamilton. It was based on a differential equation related to the one introduced by Joseph Fourier 160 years earlier to study the conduction of heat. With the Ricci flow equation, Hamilton obtained a series of spectacular results in geometry. However, progress in applying it to the conjecture eventually came to a standstill, largely because formation of singularities, akin to formation of black holes in the evolution of the cosmos, defied mathematical understanding.
Perelman's breakthrough proof of the Poincaré conjecture was made possible by a number of new elements. Perelman achieved a complete understanding of singularity formation in Ricci flow as well as the way parts of the shape collapse onto lower-dimensional spaces. He introduced a new quantity, the entropy, which decreases as time increases during Ricci flow, signaling an increase in the degree of geometric order in the underlying shape. He introduced a related local quantity, the L-functional, and he used the theories of Cheeger and Aleksandrov to understand limits of spaces changing under Ricci flow. He was also able to show that the time between formation of singularities could not become smaller and smaller, with singularities becoming spaced so closely - infinitesimally close - that the Ricci flow method would no longer apply. Perelman deployed his new ideas and methods with great technical mastery and described the results he obtained with elegant brevity. Mathematics has been deeply enriched.
Some other reactions
Fields medalist Stephen Smale, who solved the analogue of the Poincaré conjecture for spheres of dimension five or more, commented that: "Fifty years ago I was working on Poincaré's conjecture and thus hold a long-standing appreciation for this beautiful and difficult problem. The final solution by Grigoriy Perelman is a great event in the history of mathematics."
Donal O'Shea, Professor of Mathematics at Mt. Holyoke College and author of The Poincaré Conjecture, noted: "Poincaré altered twentieth-century mathematics by teaching us how to think about the idealized shapes that model our cosmos. It is very satisfying and deeply inspiring that Perelman's unexpected solution to the Poincaré conjecture, arguably the most basic question about such shapes, offers to do the same for the coming century."
Dumpling Inspired Backpack

Игорь Белоусов не побоялся открыть дело в кризис: в мае 2009 г. он вложил 300 000 руб. в запуск петербургской компании «Кард экспресс», а уже в феврале объем производства пластиковых карт достиг 90 000 штук в месяц и оборот превысил 7 млн руб.
Бывший военный, Белоусов свой первый бизнес-опыт получил еще в 90-х. Около 10 лет он прожил в Китае и возил в Россию на продажу куриное мясо, бензин, масла для автомобилей и многое другое. Но в кризис 1998 г. разорился до нуля и переехал с семьей в Нижневартовск. Несколько лет торговал запчастями для капремонта скважин. А в 2003 г. перебрался в Санкт-Петербург вслед за сыном, поступившим в Военно-медицинскую академию.
Открывать бизнес в незнакомом городе было страшно, и Белоусов устроился в машиностроительный холдинг менеджером по продажам, через три месяца был назначен коммерческим директором, а потом и вице-президентом по маркетингу.

It’s a Universal Drying Apparatus, and it’s made to heat! It’s called the “AIR” aka and its made to be able to dry anything from clothing, accessories, umbrellas, to seeds and berries! On this sphere of warming, three extenders are situated, each of them able to clamp on, move around, and support basically any configuration.

The City Car

William Mitchell and Ryan Chin propose an attractive alternative to the carbon-belching, gas-guzzling autos clogging our thoroughfares, a vision that is as much about transforming cities as about remaking cars. The City Car, a tiny, electric-powered, foldable, stackable vehicle, is their solution to freeing urban centers of paralyzing, polluting traffic, and the nightmare of parking.
Along with a tiny footprint and lack of tailpipe emissions, the City Car comes equipped with an onboard operating system that allows the car to communicate with the rest of the fleet, and omni-directional robot wheels that turn (all the way around) on a dime. Chin enthuses about the car as a “highly personalizable, customizable thing,” whose intelligence will allow it to be ergonomically configured for each driver, and whose exterior may reflect the color or even political preferences of the driver through organic LEDs.
The principle behind the car is shared use – a ride you can grab where and when you need it, especially useful for that last leg of a commute. Mitchell describes stacks of these cars stationed at the most useful points around a city, wherever you need mobility. Swipe a credit card, pick up your ride, and drop it off at your destination. Says Mitchell, “It’s like having valet parking everywhere, except you don’t have a 17-year-old who’s going to drive your car at high speed...”

RANKINGS 2: North America leaves Europe and Asia behind
The league table, produced twice yearly since 2004, ranks institutions according to the size and quality of their presence in the internet and its wider impact.
American universities tend to do well in most of the higher education league tables but in the case of the web ranking they make an especially good showing, accounting for all but one of the world's top 34 higher education institutions.
GLOBAL: First shots fired in ranking war
QS, or Quacquarelli Symonds, the research and information specialists behind the QS World University Rankings, begins work this week on its academic and employer surveys for the 2010 rankings. It also continues a partnership with US News and World Report to reproduce the league tables alongside the magazine's domestic rankings with the publication late last month of a mid-year update.
That there are now to be two rival northern hemisphere English-language rankings to spar with the Academic Ranking of World Universities compiled by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University will be bound to reinforce criticisms that international league tables favour universities in the European and North American mould and discriminate against institutions elsewhere, especially where academics tend to publish in languages other than English.

While we were looking for a way to realise a story describing "a journey through time" based on printed images, we were inspired by Mr Takeuchi's brilliant work. For this reason we intentionally quoted his work in our little movie while showing full respect to his original idea. We didnt mention his name because we did not want to do so without his prior agreement.
However after considering some of the comments posted here we have decided to add credits to him and his work, which we obviously absolutely love.

Wind Up With Glee
Putting it straight enough for you, Wind Up Socket has a timer to it, once you set the duration and time’s up, the electricity supply to that socket gets cut off. For grownups who don’t have many restrictions and can self regulate, this one may seem more cumbersome than anything else. But for moms with teens who don’t comprehend “half hour of TV / Videogames time”; this is booty! I’d only be careful of placing the cords of various gadgets carefully, otherwise its set!

Turbine Light Illuminates Highways With Wind

As more and more people across the world adopt cars as their primary mode of transportation, well-lit highways become increasingly important. But how can we sustainably power all those energy-sucking lights? TAK Studio addressed that question in their entry into this year’s Greener Gadgets competition to find the green technology solution of the future. Dubbed the Turbine Light, their design aims to illuminate our roadways using the power of the wind.
TAK’s wind-powered light uses the moving air from cars zipping by on the highway to generate energy that can be used to power roadside lighting. It’s a controversial idea–could wind from passing cars actually provide enough power for lighting?–but one that has the potential to save lots of cash in already wind-heavy regions. Alternatively, cities might consider using solar-powered lights instead. The idea has been proven to work many times over, including at the recent COP15 climate change conference. Liquavista colour e-reader in action!
Liquavista has got together with Texas Instruments, whose new OMAP systems wowed visitors at Mobile World Congress this week, to conjure up this slick new e-reader with a colour screen. Although sporting a rather large bezel, it’s a dazzling display of how a non-backlit colour screen will work, similar to the promising efforts we’ve seen from Mirasol.
The Fad Of Molecular Cooking
Gourmet Guru Michelin star chef Juan Mari Arzak, thinks Molecular Cooking is the next step in gastronomical heaven. Presented here are three design concepts – Lunar Eclipse (bowl), Fama (long plate) and Bocado de Luz (serving plate), that take culinary expertise to celestial planes. Juan Mari & his daughter Elena Arzak feel that presentation skills not only entice the palate but also dynamically alter the sensory experience during a meal. “The simple act of placing food on the plates or pouring liquid into the bowl triggers sensory stimuli and causes them to react.” Juan Mari Arzak says, “Molecular gastronomy has developed from a handful of exponents into a global phenomenon. It has led to the adaptation of scientific laboratory equipment and the invention of new kitchen technology, which makes it a small step to explore the presentation of dishes. Проект получил название Flyfire. Каждый микровертолетик управляется компьютером, в совокупности образуя пространственные объемные картинки. Поглядите на ролик по ссылке - очень красиво. Ну, как они двигаются по вертикали - понятно, а как они быстро меняют направление - это вопрос. Например, можно изменять угол лопастей.
Вертолеты делала лаборатория ARES (Aerospace Robotics and Embedded Systems). А лаборатория SENSEable - все остальное. В принципе, на очень приличную картинку надо не так уж много вертолетов - ведь "черных" пикселов не нужно :)

Printing My Food By The Molecule
Molecular gastronomy studies the physical and chemical processes that occur while cooking. It basically tries to investigate and explain the chemical reasons behind the transformation of ingredients. We saw reference to this streama while ago and now inspired by the so-called ‘molecular gastronomists’ who take pride in completely deconstructing food only to re assemble them bizarre modern ways, Philips Design presents the Food Creation Concept.
Food Creation consists of a food printer that would accept various edible ingredients and then combine and ‘print’ them in the desired shape and consistency, in much the same way as stereo lithographic printers create 3-D representations of product concepts.
For example carrot could be served as foam or parmesan cheese as a strand of spaghetti! So if the kids don’t want to eat broccoli or brussels sprouts, how about shaping them as candy or ice-cream?
Interestingly, the printer allows you to adjust the nutritional value and relevance of what was being ‘printed’ based on input from the diagnostic kitchen’s nutrition monitor. This ways you’ll always have the perfectly balanced meal.

Interestingly, the printer allows you to adjust the nutritional value and relevance of what was being ‘printed’ based on input from the diagnostic kitchen’s nutrition monitor. This ways you’ll always have the perfectly balanced meal.

A Knee-t Crutch on Wheels
Ohh that is clever. This is a project whose main function is to get you around in two kinds of style. One prerequisite: your leg has to be broken. What the weird!? Or if you want to fake it just to use such a wild and wonderful design, well that’s your own business I suppose. What this design, the “Stryder,” does, is act as both a one-legged crutch AND as a knee-standing scooter. It’s a transformer!
What designer Dat Huynh does here is take that extra step, don’t mind my word use. Made specifically for people with non-weight bearing lower leg injuries. Made for people to get around quick! Scoot around! With less strain and fatigue on the body than the usual one-crutch.
But for those situations where the wheels just don’t roll, it’s also transformable into old-reliable Y-wing single crutch. (That, with the wheels visible and all, definitely reminds one of an Auto-Bot.)
