Non-drip Umbrella

The purpose of the Mohock Smart Umbrella is to get rid of disposable bags for carrying wet umbrellas and making sure you don’t lose them. The first achieved with a handle redesign, where it’s thick and wide enough to take in the dripping water by placing the umbrella upright. And to ensure that you don’t forget it anywhere, a unique top attachment has been crafted, so that you can hang it off a table. Love the attractive colors that it comes in, plus the three-fold and two-fold options. One question Mr. Designer….when can I buy one?

• The handle functions as a water catcher. This prevents dripping, eliminating the need for disposable bags.
• Users can always hang it close by, reducing the chance of losing them.
• It can be hung at the edge of a table or on a hook.
• It is similar to a standard 3 – folding umbrella in size, but the large handle ensures a stable grip.
• The water collected inside the handle will evaporate over time, or it can be dumped after use.

A Tiny Apartment Transforms into 24 Rooms

In Hong Kong, because of the space, apartments are small and expensive. Gary Chang, an architect, decided to design a 344 sq. ft. apartment to be able to change into 24 different designs, all by just sliding panels and walls. He calls this the "Domestic Transformer."

Fold Your Saddle

It’s time to fold that transport all the way up. Get atop your bike, ride it, then store it. No more leaving it outside for bike thieves to chop up for you, nay! This is “Le Pliable,” a fold-up bike concept by Saul Maret. This one’s based on the central headset position with an X silhouette. Foldable in the frame, saddle, pedals, swingarm, and handlebar.

Depending on where you’ve gotta store it, you can fold one or all of the things I just listed. Do what’s gotta be done! All spare parts are standard, too, so this bike can be repaired easily at any of your local bike shops. Then when you’ve got to lug it around after it’s folded, no worries: the folded position affords a wheel still moving so that you can push it around like a golf caddy.

Presto Furniture Change-o!

This project goes by the name “ReStyle.” It is not a singular bit a furniture, but a collection which goes together, comes apart, works together, and works apart. It flips and floops and turns and sits in any number of configurations limited only by your own mind (and in some cases, the physical universe). What will you do with such a system of objects? Basically everything? Or will you set it one way and use it that way forever? It is a journey for a strong furniture loving heart.

ReStyle aims to be forever useful, “Longevity through versatility” is one of its credo verses. These are too:

ReStyle is a compact coffee table cluster.
ReStyle is two tables, two chairs
ReStyle is storage.
ReStyle is a desk, a seat, and a book-shelf.
ReStyle is a child’s dining table.
ReStyle is a TV and games unit.
ReStyle is a playground for children.
ReStyle is versatile.
ReStyle is sustainable.
ReStyle is whatever you want it to be.

Having just moved into a new apartment, having just moved furniture and entirely too much physical loot from one place to another not knowing what’s going to happen in this new environment I say yes, instantly, this ReStyle system has got to be somehow a great big yes in the futures of hip nomads. It’d be so great to not have to change furniture (buy and sell or trash) each time one moves due to changing space and junk requirements. Having items that sit on their head or their side… that’s just smart.

BONUS – I must tell you that this project (ReStyle) reminds me very much of the first project I ever had the privilege of writing about here at Yanko Design – Brian Lee’s Chubby Brothers Hidden Chairs Dinner Table. Similar vein!

Ropes for Bums

And of course by bums I mean rumps, bottoms, butts, whatever you’d like to call your pillowy hindquarters. You’re about to get held up by some industrial rope design and curly, twisty, lovely wooden beauty. This is “Tensile Furniture” by designer Yoav Reches and it requires no tools to assemble. Made of wood, a tiny bit of metal, and rope, and that’s it. The rope, as guided through a pattern of grooves, gets groovy by holding the whole structure of each bit of furniture here together. Then you sit. No extra intelligence needed, just a little physics knowledge to get you going.

The tiny bit of metal is stainless steel. Other than that, it’s all made out of softness and cool hard woodness. There’s Birch plywood, Iroko hardwood, and a bit of fabric for that bottom we were talking about.

Bio Robot Refrigerator by Yuriy Dmitriev

The Bio Robot fridge cools biopolymer gel through luminescence and uses non sticky, odorless gel to envelope stored food as individual pods. Sans doors and drawers, the fridge can be oriented vertical or horizontal, as per the home requirements.

Re-learning The Traffic lights

For the greater good of mankind I’m willing to do my bit and learn new traffic rules. If it saves a life or time, then why not! What Uni-Signal here is saying, that we have been using round traffic lights for ages now, with only the red-amber-green-colors for aid. How about prepping the system and broadening the spectrum of usage (by colorblind people) and change the shape of the lights! Triangle-Red-Stop, Rectangle-Amber-Stay, Round-Green-Go! If nothing else, it looks swanky and now we can teach tiny-tots shapes and colors in one go!

Glass Flower Pot

Botanists have secrets and we must learn them. Did you know some plants perform better when their roots are directly exposed to sunlight? A common example is the popular orchid. Every time I buy one, it dies within weeks. The Life Pot is a clear glass container that shows subsoil growth. That plant’s roots become part of the sculptural element. Don’t worry about breaking it because it’s made from Pyrex glass.

Она показывает, как рынок дизайна одежды и генерирует сотни миллиардов долларов практически при полном отсутствии интеллектуальной собственности (у них есть только трейдмарки, то есть можно полностью копировать чужой дизайн, но нельзя копировать логотип).

Square House, Back Yard

How square would you like you home to be? So square? Me too. Let’s talk about this house right here. It goes by the name of “Backyard House” and it’s designed by Thomas Schaer of SHED Architects. Sitting right up on the hill looking down over downtown Seattle and Elliott Bay. Spaces and finishes and big fat giant walls of glass for optimum in livability and having a really, really amazing time just sitting in the living room.

So you’re sitting over Seattle. It’s going to rain somewhat of a lot. That’s what Seattle does, it rains! So you’re going to want to have an amazing house to sit in. Unobstructed views all around, looking over the city, peeking at the people around you. It’s open wide, yet secluded enough to make you feel fabulously elite. The whole place is “Built Green” certified with environment, community, and one more thing in mind:

two and a half words,

rooftop deck.

That’s what’s up.

Second and a Half Dimension Shelves

This project goes by the name “Imeüble” and it’s a shelving system that accesses not just your eyeballs and book-storing hands, it works with your mind to help you store information the same way you learn to associate words to their meanings! The easiest comparison is one the designer uses: when you read the word “cornfield,” you imagine a field full of corn, not the word “cornfield.” In that the shelf appears to be 2D but is actually 3D, this whole system works in the same environment of learning.
Confused? It’s really quite simple and wonderful. As you look at the shelves, they appear to be flat, sideways, weird in some way or another to your eyes. In reality, they’re simple plastic, shaped in a way that instills an image that’s much stronger than it’s actual simple function. Thus it’s relationship to how spoken/written words work – while the word itself is quite simple, what it represents can be quite complicated.
In this fabulous work of associations, designer Bjørn Jørund Blikstad hopes to inspire you to take another look at what storing items on these shelves really means.

Two Slams One Broke Egg

You are terrible at breaking eggs! Or not. I know I’m terrible at it, there’s always a bit of shell in there with the white. But those days of crunchy scramblers are over! This object right here is an egg cracker, it’s called the “Punch-Bell Egg Cracker” and it’s fabulously superior to all the other cracking instruments I’ve ever used. Granted, my methods of hitting an egg with a hammer weren’t the most inspired bits of my thoughtful history, but this metal object is tops.

Stainless steel egg cracking loveliness. You may have seen this object on one of the original Iron Chef episodes back when you watched TV. All you’ve got to do is place the hat on the egg and drop the ball down twice. It employs the perfect amount of force in just the right place to crack the top of the egg off for a perfect pour of that scrumptious early day breakfast meal.

My Kitchen Is A Cabinet! Really

No Kidding, but if I were to listen to He Ruimin then my kitchen would be just a cabinet with everything imaginable within it. Refrigerator, electric cook top, garbage bin, storage, and indicator lights on the fridge and stove to warn me about hot and cold surfaces! Good for the LOHAS gang, this concept makes me smile and frown. Smile because I think its and neat idea for restricted homes, and frown because I love elaborate big kitchens!

A little Nature Here And There

OMG this is so freakin’ ADORABLE. These Leaf Ties replace boring plastic ones you may have bundling up cables and wires around the home. Bring a little nature to it by using these ties instead. Of course, I would use it as a decorative element. Hell, I may even just wrap it around my fingers and go out like that. If you want to get really creative, think about how those exposed cables sort of like like vines, except they’re missing one crucial component – leaves! Just let that marinate in your head for a minute.

A Perfume For A Man’s Man

Hey now who doesn’t love a good smelling man? Even the brawniest, burliest men a.k.a construction workers deserve a little eau de toilette. Art Lebedev makes it a point to create a scent worthy of a man with notes of bergamot, rosemary, birch, cedar, iris, and cardamon called the Spirit Level. But even the toughest men wouldn’t be caught dead with a frou frou bottle so this one comes packaged and functions as a level.
