Первый раз я столкнулся с адекватным переводом слова sustainable на русский язык в словосочетании sustainable restaurants. Известные переводы: устойчивый, поддерживаемый - не походят. Превод "экологичный ресторан" - даст более широкий смысл. Совеременные ретораны позиционируют свою пищу, как экологичную, но их работа связана с избыточным потреблением, нерациональным использованием и большим количеством выбросов, не только прямы, но и косвенных. В результате я перевел бы название этого выступления Артура Потса Досона: "Видение рационального реторана в современном понимании".

3-D Braille Map That Talks

The Brainovi is a Braille navigation map that uses a combination of verbal instructions and touch display, to help a blind person travel alone. All he needs to do is ‘speak’ his destination into the device and wait for a 3-D map to pop-up, giving him a ‘feel’ of his route. Corresponding verbal directions are relayed to the user via a Bluetooth earpiece, thus guiding him to his destination. The overall effect is to give the user a sense of freedom while traveling alone, without depending upon a companion.

Brother's AirScouter floats a 16-inch display onto your eye biscuit (video)

First announced in July, Brother's updated AirScouter wearable display is finally getting its first live demonstration at Brother World in Japan. The prototype Retinal Imaging Display (RID) projects safe, fast-moving light directly onto your retina that appears to the viewer as a 16-inch display floating transparently at a distance of about 3 feet. The tech used by Brother was harvested from its own optical system technologies found in laser and inkjet printers. Brother plans to launch the AirScouter for industrial uses in Japan where the glasses could overlay operating manuals onto machinery, for example. Later, Brother plans to adopt its RID tech into consumer products worldwide making for a more immersive (and practical) augmented reality experience.

Noise cancellation earphones eliminate ambient noises so that you can listen to music clearly or sleep peacefully in the drone. The Kill Noise earplug suits this purpose and realizes noise reduction by electronic filtering, which can make people communicate easily in the noisy environments. The bright-orange polyester buds have an adjustment knob to set the filters and a built-in battery that lasts long.

Robots Save Earth

Science Fiction has been less-than-kind when it comes to giving robots an environmentally friendly outlook. Robots are supposed to destroy the world, not save it, right? Nay. Nay I say. And so also says Anna-Karin Bergkvist, designer of this tree planting robot. Reforestation on the horizon, that’s what this robot says. Four legs, extendable planting arm, and planting head. That’s what we’ve got here. One green robot walker.

This machine is built to be small and tread lightly so that it has as little negative impact on the plants and animals it must walk through in order to get around the newly planted forest. By using hot steam to destroy competing vegetation (choking vines that kill trees, for example), it poses no threat to the animals that afterward come upon planting spots. Each seed is planted with a biodegradable plastic protective barrier, protecting it from bugs until it’s old enough that they could take chomps and it’d still survive. The robot itself is run on steam and fueled by “forestry waste” such as animal pellets and wood chips.

One robot can carry around 320 seedlings in one load. Seeds are fed into the machine at the front and loaded onto a revolving cartridge until full – at which point the robot begins it’s cycle. The robot stands in place, planting as many seeds as is reasonable and it can reach in one location. Once finished, the arm retracts to fill up again as the robot moves on to the next location.

There is a trailer involved in this situation also, the one that brings the robot to the locations it’s going to seed. Once in place, the robot uses this trailer as a base camp, returning as needed to re-fill with seeds, fuel, and water automatically. The robot can work in patterns, a complete “virtual forest” can be programmed into it for planting. Landscape Architects, get out your pencils and pads!

Fold Your Saddle

It’s time to fold that transport all the way up. Get atop your bike, ride it, then store it. No more leaving it outside for bike thieves to chop up for you, nay! This is “Le Pliable,” a fold-up bike concept by Saul Maret. This one’s based on the central headset position with an X silhouette. Foldable in the frame, saddle, pedals, swingarm, and handlebar.

Depending on where you’ve gotta store it, you can fold one or all of the things I just listed. Do what’s gotta be done! All spare parts are standard, too, so this bike can be repaired easily at any of your local bike shops. Then when you’ve got to lug it around after it’s folded, no worries: the folded position affords a wheel still moving so that you can push it around like a golf caddy.

Одно кольцо, чтобы управлять всем

Хочу поделиться идеей, котороая возникла у меня совсем недавно. Она довольно проста — интегрировать RFID-тэг в кольцо, которое можно использовать как универсальный ключ и идентификатор личности. Почему именно кольцо? Такая форма удобнее всего для повседневного ношения, его не нужно искать, когда оно понадобится. Его трудно потерять — в отличии от более традиционных идентификаторов в виде плаcтиковых карт и брелков. Кроме того, в кольцо можно встроить датчик безопасности, который будет деактивировать кольцо при снятии с пальца и делать его бесполезным, если оно попадет в чужие руки.

Такое кольцо можно было бы использовать, чтобы:

• Отпирать входные двери
• Использовать как идентификатор личности
• Не позволять использовать мобильный телефон никому, кроме законного хозяина
• Разблокировать компьютер
  

Самые дорогие правительственные сайты

Перевод правительства в электронную версию, на которой так помешан Медведев, уже обошелся бюджету в 1 млрд. рублей. Но Дмитрию Анатольевичу всё мало. Он требует, чтобы все эти разговоры перешли, наконец-таки, в прикладное русло. То есть 1 млрд. это еще далеко не предел. Посмотрим, как израсходовался наш первый и не последний миллиард.

Пока, самый дорогой государственный сайт принадлежит Федеральному казначейству, он обошелся бюджету почти в 82 миллиона рублей. Разрабатывала его ООО «ИБС Экспертиза», как ни странно, единственная компания, подававшая заявку на участие в конкурсе. Контора серьёзная, в её портфолио находится уже 20 государственных проектов, сайты Газпрому, Лукойлу, металлургам, машиностроителям, энергетикам и прочим «мелким» сошкам

Президент РФ Дмитрий Медведев провел выездное заседание совета при президенте по развитию информационного общества, на котором потребовал прикладного использования новейших технологий.

Господин Медведев заявил членам совета о том, что информационные технологии "пора перевести в прикладное русло", сообщает «КоммерсантЪ». В первую очередь это затронет здравоохранение, образование и культуру, что "позволит более точно планировать бюджетные расходы на социальную сферу". "Внедрение электронных образовательных ресурсов идет еще достаточно медленно,— отметил президент.— Электронный журнал оценок с доступом родителей к оценкам через интернет и получение в ряде случаев SMS-оповещений используются только в школах в крупных городах". По словам президента, он сам пользовался подобной системой и считает ее эффективной. "Всегда приятно заглянуть, посмотреть на успехи своего ребенка или, наоборот, на двойку",— сказал он.

"Сейчас существует реальная возможность передачи закрытой информации через интернет,— заявил господин Фурсенко.— Но для этого требуются определенные технические решения. В Минкомсвязи и Рособрнадзоре работают над этим".

Morph is a concept demonstrating some of the possibilities nanotechnologies might enable in future communication devices. Morph can sense its environment, is energy harvesting and self cleaning .
Morph is a flexible two-piece device that can adapt its shape to different use modes. Nanotechnology enables to have adaptive materials yet rigid forms on demand.
It is also featured in the MoMA online exhibition "Design and the Elastic Mind". It has been a collaboration project of Nokia Research Center and Cambridge Nanoscience Center.
